I have a really bad habit of watching popular dramas very late. I’ve heard of Cheese in the Trap a long time ago and I’ve read a lot of positive reviews about it. I wonder why I decided to watch it now. What I know is that I try to avoid mainstream because I get disappointed sometimes. What most people think is so good might not turn out to be the same for me. I hope the fans won’t take it against me but I will use “Love in the Moonlight” as an example because I got so bored with it I decided not to finish. I rarely give up shows even if they’re bad because I can always just skip through the boring parts but Love in the Moonlight was such a snorefest I couldn’t take it anymore. Anyway, let me tell you why I regret watching Cheese in the Trap four years late.
Synopsis:
Yoo Jung is a rich guy with a personality disorder (if you consider being petty a disorder lol). He secretly punishes those who wrong him by using any means but mostly by blackmail and manipulation. Most people know him as kind and sociable but Hong Seol kind of figured him out right away. Seeing that Seol was not fooled by his facade, Jung tried to give her a hard time. Seol got so scared of him she decided to take another break from the university. But Jung suddenly became interested in her and stopped her from leaving school.
Baek In-Ho and Yoo Jung grew up together and were best friends. The bad blood between them began when Jung’s scheme got In-Ho’s hand injured he couldn’t play piano anymore. In-Ho left home which means leaving behind his dreams and his only sister Baek In-Ha. When he returned to Seoul, he met Seol and became friends with her even though Jung told him to stay away.
Baek In-Ha is a spoiled brat who has been living off of Yoo Jung’s father’s money. She’s very materialistic and doesn’t care about other people but herself and her expensive bags. She’s in love with Yoo Jung that’s why he was able to use her for his schemes at times. Her life turned upside down when her financial support have been cut off because of Jung.
I found this drama refreshing because of the university setting. We mostly see dramas that are set in middle school or high school but in this drama we got a glimpse of university campus life in South Korea through Jung and Seol. It’s also not very common to have a protagonist with a villainous personality. One thing I’m disappointed about is that Jung was not able to change his personality in an impactful way by the end of the drama. Being in love with Seol only changed the way he treated her but didn’t change the way he treated other people. A lot of comments I’ve read say they were disappointed with the ending but for me it was only appropriate. Because I believe that love should have a positive effect in people which is not what happened to Seol and Jung. Seol was willing to accept everything about Jung but she couldn’t change him because he did what she wanted to do but couldn’t. Seol knew she was enabling Jeong but she couldn’t let go. Jung’s decision to leave was the best thing he ever did.
The second lead with the male lead personality, Baek In-Ho, is my favorite character in this drama. Seol had a positive impact on his life because she helped him find his lost dream. We’ve seen this on many dramas before and maybe that’s why this drama is so good because he’s only the second lead. He didn’t get the girl but he got to find his dream. Baek In-Ha, on the other hand, tried to hold on to her old life until the very end but you will see why she’s as crazy as she is as the story goes on. Her past is not an excuse for how she is but it gives an explanation and it made me sympathize with her character.
I give this drama a 9.5/10 score for the plot and for the cast. Whenever I watch a movie or drama I always get sucked into the story, not into the visual of the cast or camera work or editing. I also look into what I can learn from it. If you haven’t seen this drama yet, I recommend you start now. Maybe you’ll like it, too.
